Karl Robinson admits Josh Magennis needs to score more goals - but has praised his striker’s commitment to Charlton.

Magennis, who was the subject of interest from Bolton last month, netted for the first time in 15 games last weekend to take his goal tally to six for the season.

And Robinson believes the Northern Ireland international has been in top form this term.

The Valley boss told News Shopper: “He’s getting better and better. Josh has been top of the physical data for two weeks.

“Josh has been outstanding all season. He's not scored enough goals, we know that. That’s what he’ll be judged on.

“But there are other elements we have to judge these players on. To go through all of the speculation on transfer deadline day, to train the way he did amid all of that, and to come up with the goal.

“When Oxford’s full-back makes the mistake, Josh is still 30 metres away from where he makes contact with the ball. I’m so pleased for him and let’s hope it’s the start of many goals.

“He still needs to score more. He knows that. We have a good relationship, like I do with all the players. It’s open and honest. He really buys into it.

“He’s been gaining confidence because of his training habits. His training habits have been excellent.”

Magennis, 27, was targeted by a section of Charlton fans during his barren run in front of goal.

But Robinson has defended his number nine.

He added: “Josh cares about Charlton, not himself. This is what I want people to understand.

“If you said to Josh ‘you won’t score for the rest of the season but Charlton will get promoted’ he’d take that. But if you said to Josh ‘you’re going to score 20 goals between now and the end of the season and Charlton won’t get promoted, but you’re going to get a move’ he’d say ‘no’.

“This is the bit I want. I want people here that only care about one thing and that’s Charlton. That means fans, players, staff, everybody, achieving one common goal together.”
