Charlton ended a run of eight league games without a win after beating Oldham 1-0 at the Valley.

Stephy Mavididi’s moment of quality was enough to seal a vital three points.

Here are five things we learned…

Stephy Mavididi provides the magic spark

The Arsenal loanee was the club’s first, and could be the last, signing of the January transfer window. He started on the left wing and terrorised the right-back.

In a game lacking in quality, Mavididi’s goal proved to be the winner. He skipped past two Oldham players before firing past the goalkeeper.

Tariqe Fosu has been desperately missed and Mavididi is the closest player Charlton have to the winger at the moment.

Karl Robinson still seems downbeat

Despite the win, Robinson, very much like Thursday in his press conference, was not himself.

He’s clearly frustrated by the lack of funds - and rightly so. The club is so close to promotion… all it needs is a few extra bodies to help the cause.

But it looks like there will be no investment this month with Robinson being forced to work with what he’s got. Injured players coming back will increase the numbers within the squad, but the frontline options need to be addressed as soon as possible.

Ahmed Kashi will be so valuable for the second half of the campaign

Apart from the Southend defeat, where he wasn't fully fit, Kashi has constantly been a 7/10 performer every time he’s played.

Yesterday, he showed just how important he is to Charlton. He was the link between the defence and midfield and no one got past him.

Kashi captained the side for the first time in his Addicks career and led by example. He is going to be so vital for Charlton’s promotion ambitions this season.

Signings could spark a serious promotion challenge

It’s unlikely to happen, but if Roland Duchatelet spends money, Charlton will comfortably end up in the play-offs.

They have the players to compete for a top-two finish, but 14 points seems too much to catch up now.

Sign some players with League One experience to add much-needed depth to a depleted squad, then you’ll have a team ready to give it a right go in the second half of the campaign.

One point off the play-offs with injured players coming back is promising

There has been a poor run of form coupled with the never-ending injury list but Charlton are still in the mix for promotion.

It highlights how well the club did at the start of the season to get the points on the board.

Hopefully the takeover talk can be pushed to one side, the team can focus on the league and the sole aim - promotion.

Jason Pearce, Chris Solly, Jake Forster-Caskey and Fosu could be back in two weeks’ time and they will only strengthen Charlton’s squad.
