Charlton boss Karl Robinson has hailed Gillingham star Josh Wright - but has played down talk of signing him.

Reports on Monday night linked Wright, who has just one year left on his Gills contract, with a move to the Valley.

The Addicks have Joe Aribo, Andrew Crofts, Jake Forster-Caskey and Ahmed Kashi vying for central midfield places - something Robinson pointed out.

Speaking after his side’s 2-0 win over Dover, he told News Shopper: “Listen, Josh Wright has been here before, he’s a player that I very much like, he’s somebody who I think could definitely play at the top end of League One.

“But we've got Crofty, Kashi, Joe and Jake, that’s a lot of players in there.

“And when you talk about him maybe playing as a number 10, we've got Karlan [Ahearne-Grant], Ricky [Holmes], Tariqe [Fosu] so right now it’s not a position that we’re looking to fill.

“But he’s certainly somebody who I really like, I do like his talent and mentality but right now, we’re fully occupied in those positions.”

Charlton were able to put out a strong starting eleven against Dover, despite the absence of first-teamers Patrick Bauer, Jason Pearce, Lee Novak, Tony Watt, Chris Solly and Ahmed Kashi.

Forster-Caskey’s first-half goal and a late strike from young striker Reeco Hackett-Fairchild made it three consecutive pre-season wins for the Addicks.

And Robinson is happy with the way his squad is taking shape.

He said: “We had no Solls, Pearcy or Bauer, hopefully we can bring more players into the back-line.

“We were without Kashi, [Ricky] Holmes, Tariqe, Lee Novak, Tony Watt and we finished the game with no Jake Forster-Caskey, Josh Magennis or Ezri Konsa on the pitch.

“We’re starting to look like we've got a decent squad and we still want to bring four more players in.”
