Valley boss Guy Luzon has explained why he decided to allow Rhoys Wiggins to join Sheffield Wednesday yesterday.

The 27-year-old spent four years on Charlton’s books and was on a long-term deal with the Addicks.

However, Wiggins fell down the pecking order last season under Luzon after failing to dislodge Morgan Fox from the team once he had recovered from injury.

Fox’s form at left-back, together with the summer addition of Zakarya Bergdich, meant Wiggins’ departure to Hillsborough had a certain inevitability to it in the end.

Luzon said: “I think we have two great left-backs in Zakarya Bergdich and Morgan Fox.

“When you have this situation you let him (Wiggins) go.

“Was he disappointed? You would need to ask him but I’m happy with the squad that we have.

“He is a good player and he gave a lot for Charlton Athletic in the last couple of years but now he will leave and it is good for him.

“We have two good left-backs and for us that is OK. We wish him all the success and I hope that he will do well.”

The head coach was then asked whether Fox or Bergdich would fill the left-back role this season.

Luzon replied: “Fox played well in the last couple of games and Bergdich is not ready to play and start a game.

“But Zakarya will be able to play left-back and also he can play left-wing.”

Meanwhile, striker Igor Vetokele is set to miss the opening games of the new Championship season which gets underway at home to QPR this weekend.

The head coach said: “Igor Vetokele is still injured and he is not available for this Saturday.

“I think he will be back in two or three weeks.

“He feels well. Next week he will start to join in with the training and then he will be fit to come back to the squad.”

Another man set to miss out the start of the campaign is keeper Stephen Henderson, with Nick Pope poised to stand in.

“A good case will be he will come back after the first international break in September,” added Luzon.

“We will miss him for five, six or seven games.

“Pope will start the games and now we are searching for someone who will be the second keeper.”

It is a possible Charlton might be able to bring in that second keeper in time for the QPR game.
