SKIPPER Danny Shittu has claimed Saturday’s 5-1 home defeat to Derby was one of the lowest points in his career.

The Lions were powerless to overcome an impressive Derby side which clinically dismantled a nervous looking Millwall team from start to finish.

Shittu was one of a number of home players who struggled in the game and the Nigerian has rarely felt more downbeat than this during his playing career.

“It was one of my lowest times in football,” he said.

“Nobody likes to lose, but to lose in the way we did we are very disappointed.

“For us to lose by that amount of goals at our home ground, we are very disappointed in ourselves.

“It is a team game and every single player, even the ones that didn’t play, wanted to talk about it after the game.”

It was hard to find any positives for Millwall, especially defensively where Shittu and partner Mark Beevers were unable to come to terms with Derby’s counter attacking pace.

Manager Steve Lomas said after the game one or two of the longer serving players may be becoming stale at the club and the experienced defender has held his hands up after a poor performance.

“Every player has their good games and bad games,” Shittu said.

“You can’t play well every time but I was really disappointed with my performance today.

“As a defender you get paid to not let in goals, so it is disappointing, but the way I feel is the same way every player feels in that dressing room.

“We came into this game with confidence.

“It is hard to pinpoint exactly what it is, we are disappointed with the goals, disappointed with the result and disappointed with the way we played.”

Millwall now face a big week with table-topping Blackpool coming to The Den tomorrow and the small matter of a south-east London derby at Charlton on Saturday.

But Shittu is pleased to have the games coming thick and fast and the chance to get the fans back on side is the main thing.

“You have to pick yourselves up,” he said.

“It is good thing that we have a game on Tuesday and we have to be confident going into that.

“That result affects every single one of us.

“Saturday is the local derby with Charlton too which we usually do well in, so we have a chance to turn it around.”
