Letter to the editor: Why must we take the blame?

I am one of the many people of an age group that is blamed for the crisis in our hospitals. Our crime – we are living too long.

It was our age group that created our wonderful health service.

We are told that we take up too many beds due to no home care for us when we get home.

What happened to the home help service that my mother had? Due to cutbacks, local authorities cannot maintain this service to what it used to be.

We are told not to clog up the system and try to get better.

We all know that if we do not repair something, it will only get worse.

If we really want a good health service for our children and parents, we must put our hand deeper in out pockets. Tax should not be a dirty word. One party said that the other uses the health service as a political football.

I am sorry, it is political.

Even now, some private contractors are pulling out and it can only be for one reason – no profit in it for them.

We all know how hard our doctors and nurses do their work and we should thank them with all our hearts.

But patriotism will not solve the problem, they need the tools to do the work.

Remember, we all get old.
