Letter to the editor: Getting rid of free children’s bus travel to fund Freedom Passes for the elderly (Our passes are precious, January 7) – now there is a battle that I never expected.
Another case of the elderly persecuting the young?
There is already a charge of £10 to purchase an Oyster card. This allows free bus travel to children aged 11 and over.
I understand there is currently no charge for the passes, which gives you free travel on all London transport.
I actually agree with this and also agree they should remain free of charge.
Children do not travel completely free of charge.
They pay fares from the age of five on most National Rail services. Freedom Pass holders, on the other hand, do not.
I could say that parents of children are subsidising Freedom Pass holders free travel, in the same way that you state pensioners subsidise the young via paltry interest rates.
You obviously do not have children or grandchildren of your own and I think it is very sad that you blame children for lack of interest rates on your savings.
You are blaming the wrong people for these regulations.
Children do not have the power to vote, the government makes these rules – you do and maybe there lies the problem.
