SOL Campbell has landed himself another big signing-on fee by joining Newcastle but why does this guy strike me as representing everything wrong about the modern-day Premier League footballer?

Campbell’s sole motivation wherever he ends up appears to be money and he is reportedly going to be on £30k a week at Newcastle, not bad for someone who is 35.

This time last year he was about to start the new season as a Notts County player in Legaue Two, again reportedly on mega bucks.

However, he decided to walk out only 29 days after signing a five-year deal and having played just one game.

Campbell whinged afterwards County had broken promises they would sign better players and added there was no fault on his part.

Of course not, that goes without saying.

Just as there were no regrets from him about jumping ship all those years ago from Spurs to join hated rivals Arsenal, despite the understandable fury his move provoked among the fans who had once worshipped him.

Then there was his outrageous decision to sue Portsmouth for £1.7m earlier this year for unpaid ‘image rights’, just as the club was about to go to the wall.

Not that he cared less, mind.

Campbell spent the second half of last season at Arsenal and was linked with a move to Celtic this summer but clearly Newcastle were willing to pay more.

You might have thought after their previous bad experience of paying over the odds for mercenaries who don’t care less about the club, Newcastle would have learned their lesson and given Campbell a wide berth. Clearly not.

But it isn’t just in the top flight you will find the likes of Campbell, a point underlined by Ebbsfleet assistant boss Paul McCarthy earlier this week when he revealed several targets were pricing themselves out of moves with their excessive wage demands.

Yes, you did read that last bit right, that is Ebbsfleet of the Conference South.

It seems there is no end to the greed which dominates our game and now filters down to all levels.

No doubt if you pointed the absurdity of it all out to Campbell, he would flatly deny it has anything to do with the likes of him, just as he always does.
