I AM concerned there's an epidemic of tunnel vision in Bexley's schools.

Despite having almost 20 years' experience of working as a PA/executive assistant I've found I'm apparently unemployable by many schools in Bexley simply because I don't have any experience of a computer software package.

Whatever happened to on-the-job training and recognition of transferable skills?

I've just seen a second advert for a school secretary's job in Sidcup.

Having called the school today for further information I asked why the job was still vacant.

Apparently not one of the first batch of candidates had experience of the software package, therefore the job has been re-advertised.

Doesn't this tell us something? There are many people out there looking for jobs in Bexley's schools but it seems all the experience in the world is worthless.

I guess there are two kinds of employers, those who will be put off by your handicap, and therefore won't hire you, and those who will not be put off by your handicap, and therefore will hire you.

No prizes for guessing which category Bexley's school recruitment staff fall into.
