WITH reference to Pensioner Wants To Fight 2012 Tax (News Shopper, February 22) I don't think Ken Livingstone has properly addressed the issue raised by Brian Dawe.

The Mayor has been reported as saying: "The whole of the UK will gain from the Games.

"But London will benefit the most and it is right Londoners should contribute."

He has also been quoted as saying "this is a good deal for London" but this is disingenuous.

Mr Dawe has not denied or disputed any of the statements made by the Mayor.

His rationale for not wanting to contribute is because he feels, along with many others in his age group, will not be alive in 2012 to see the gains and/or benefits from this good deal.

It is a nationally-accepted truth above-inflation council tax rises are about to be imposed this year.

Together with the exceptionally large increases announced in the price of gas, electricity, water and other essential services, a lot of pensioners will find it very difficult to finance their existing lifestyles.

It is not surprising, therefore, they see no reason why they should be expected to contribute additionally to something which a large number of them will not be around to witness.

One has to ask if Ken Livingstone would be prepared to make his contribution to the Games if he thought he might not be around.

Would he contribute even if he would not gain or benefit from the glory and prestige from being involved in the organisation of this good deal? I think not.
