HAVING read Tales Of Shooters Hill (News Shopper, February 22) it is the first time I have heard the origin of its name came from its associations with crime.
The origin which I and many others have been led to believe is in fact quite the opposite.
In early medieval times it was the law all able-bodied men had to spend a number of hours practising with their longbow, in order to be ready and able to defend the realm.
The communal butts for this practice area were situated on Shooters Hill, hence its name.
An association with crime gave Blackheath its name.
