Ignoring the problems faced by his Bexleyheath & Crayford constituent Sarah Rossetter, Labour MP Nigel Beard argued the child tax credit had been a stunning success and the national statistics proved it (News Shopper, May 21). However, Mr Beard’s constituents who have actually tried to claim the tax credit, are more than likely to hold a very different view. Millions of middle and low-income families have not received the money they were promised.

Payments have not been made on time and families with young children have been told they were not entitled to any help. This chaos has been caused by the Government’s attempt to turn the Inland Revenue from a taxation department into a benefits department and it clearly has not been able to cope. This, added to rising council tax bills and National Insurance contributions, is making life much harder for many families than it ought to be. Councillor Graham D’Amiral Blendon & Penhill
