I strongly agree with the proposal to restrict the sale and the use of fireworks (News Shopper, May 21) but I feel it could be even more restricted.

Last November, we had the experience of people driving a medium-sized van and throwing the very large exhibition-type fireworks out through the rear door.

They exploded onto the road. shooting their contents horizontally with some hitting the houses.

I phoned the police but was kept in a queue for at least 10 minutes. By which time the offenders were miles away and I never did get to speak to the police.

The smoke was so thick, other motorists had to brake hard to avoid an accident and at least three of the empty containers were found the next day.

This happened on two separate days but I did not see what happened the first time. If people behave so irresponsibly, it proves they are not worthy to be in possession of such material.

I would be happy to agree to a total ban on the sale of fireworks and for only properly-run public displays to be allowed.
