WE ARE keen environmentalists and have been trying to adhere to Greenwich Council's new policy regarding the recycling of refuse, but putting out a plastic sack does not work.

Even if put on top of the bins, foxes tear open the sacks, spilling the contents.

The council sells a black plastic box for non-recyclable rubbish at a cost of £9.

We were willing to buy one, if it could be treated like a black bin bag, which could be put out with the other bins for collection.

Having made inquiries, we were told the box was to hold a black bin bag. Okay so far.

But then we were told, for collection, we would have to remove the bag from the box and leave the bag in the open with the wheelie bins.

Apart from other non-recyclable rubbish the sacks may contain used tissues, chewing gum, nappies and used cat litter.

We like wildlife. We don't want foxes culled.

We just want to be able to put the rubbish into a fox-proof container.

Some officials suggest non-recyclable rubbish should be put out in the morning, so the bags are not attractive to foxes at night.

However, we are two elderly ladies with disabilities. Getting up at the crack of dawn to catch the refuse collectors does not appeal to us.

If a person allows their dog to defecate in a public place and does not clean it up, they can be fined.

How about fining the person or persons who made this bin bag rule?
