WITH reference to your article Plans To Sell Scout Land Are Refused (News Shopper, January 24).

It is important to bear in mind the support residents, particularly in Eden Road, have given to the Scouts and Guides over the 50 or so years the group has been there.

Maybe the chairman of the group does not realise individual residents have been leaders and helpers in the various sections.

Others have also participated in fundraising activities as members of the supporters' committee.

It is fair to say the group would probably not be in existence without the efforts of these people.

And we recognise the importance of the group to the community and the need to raise funds.

However, as residents, we were seriously opposed to the sale of nearly 25 per cent of the land to build two five-bedroom town houses.

This development would reduce parking facilities in Eden Road and make access to and from the road more hazardous.

The houses would have been built over an existing watercourse and residents were worried about an increased risk of flooding.

A covenant says the land cannot be used for anything other than scouting and guiding activities.

The developers have said we can get round that'. What kind of example does that set for our young people?
