IN REPLY to Mr de Vere criticising the plans to restore the Manor House and library in Lee (Same Labour, Same Problems In Our Borough, Letters, News Shopper. January 24).
Your correspondent is in no way representative of the community's view of this project.
The Lee Manor Society, a conservation group, and the Manor House Gardens Users' Group both back the restoration plan.
We polled residents over many months and, while opinions differ on the details, the overwhelming view is the scheme should go ahead.
Compromises have to be made in adapting old buildings to modern use.
Opponents of the scheme seem unable to accept this but their boneheaded refusal to adjust to reality threatens to stall the refurbishment, condemning a fine building to neglect.
The council's proposals have the backing of English Heritage.
We have waited many years for this scheme to go ahead. There should be no further delay.
CHARLES BATCHELOR Chairman, Lee Manor Society
