Walking Football is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK with over 1,200 clubs registered to play and this low-contact sport and international matches have been played with a World Cup in process for 2020.
This year's TRA Over-50s Walking Football National League South winners, Bexley Walking Football Club, were recently received by the Mayor and Mayoress of Bexley at the Civic Offices to celebrate their success.
The 16-team League comprised of some of the best sides in Southern England, including Romford; Colchester; Luton; Norwich; Watford; Leyton Orient and Dagenham & Redbridge.
Bexley started their League programme with a bang, winning all of their first 9 matches. They then largely managed to sustain their good form for most of the season, finally topping the table by a clear 4 points from runners up Romford.
The club's chairman Dave Burke said: "It's nice to be recognised for our achievements and we very much appreciate the Mayor's interest in our club.
"We started in 2013 as a small group and as we've grown, we've entered more competitions. This year we've formed up as a properly constituted club.
"We have more than 40 members for whom we provide twice weekly community sessions as well as competitive walking football opportunities.
"We are in the process of affiliating to the Kent County FA and will enter their County Walking Football Cup in the summer. Winning the TRA National League South has been the icing on the cake in this very successful and important year for us."
Bexley WFC hold regular community sessions at Goals Bexleyheath on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Further information can be obtained from derekvaughan17@yahoo.com or earnold@quickmail.co.uk
