Two Just Stop Oil activists have climbed to the top of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, forcing police to close the bridge.
The group has demanded that the government halts all new oil and gas licences and consents.
At around 5am this morning, two climbers ascended the two 84m masts on the North side of the bridge.
This has forced police to stop traffic from entering the bridge which is now expected to remain shut for 24 hours.
Morgan Trowland, 39, a bridge design engineer from London, said: “As a professional civil engineer, each year as I renew my registration, I commit to acting within our code of ethics, which requires me to safeguard human life and welfare and the environment.
"Our government has enacted suicidal laws to accelerate oil production: killing human life and destroying our environment. I can’t challenge this madness in my desk job, designing bridges, so I’m taking direct action, occupying the QE2 bridge until the government stops all new oil.”
Just Stop Oil protestors spray paint over Aston Martin showroom
This comes after Just Stop Oil protestors sprayed paint over a luxury car showroom in central London.
The protestors also blocked off Park Lane from 11am on Sunday morning as part of their action.
Demonstrators sat down in the road, holding large orange banners, with a number glueing themselves to the tarmac or locking themselves together.
One protestor then sprayed orange paint over the Aston Martin showroom situated in Park Lane.
