An online chatroom admin where a man apparently hanged himself live on camera has said he repeatedly tried to get others to call police from another country.

Self-employed plasterer Gregory Tomkins, of Clarendon Road in Wallington, was found dead at his address by police at around 3.30am on Christmas Day.

The 39-year-old is said to have hanged himself on a live feed in front of users in an ‘insults’ chat group.

His motivations and intentions are unclear.

A chatroom user, who goes by the name Throat Punch, said: “As an admin in the room at the time this tragedy took place, the frustration of not being able to contact police because dialling 101 or 999 from a country outside the UK became immediately apparent.

“By the time it took me to get a room member from the UK to contact 999, it was way too late.

“Sitting by watching people [in the chatroom] ignore requests to call police was truly futile.”

Mr Tomkins added a ‘Merry Christmas’ banner to his Facebook profile photo on his account, G Tomkins Plastering, and changed his bio to ‘JUST DO IT’ on December 23.

He also posted a reference to Keddles, believed to be the mixed martial arts gym in Orpington. We have attempted to contact Keddles.

Another chatroom user, who does not wish to be named, said: “He had come into the room on his regular screenname that he uses and then for some reason he went and changed his screenname.

“When he actually comes in the room he is always on the microphone and he talks. But this time he didn’t talk and he was just sitting there. After he left the room he cammed up, and that was when he did what he did."

People have been leaving tributes on this website and our social media channels.

A user known as 'Putin' wrote described Mr Tomkins as 'a funny man' who 'did a lot of funny stuff in the chat room' and 'always meant well'.

Lee Chisholm posted: "He was a nice quiet bloke, a old neighbour. So sad, he was always alone."

Hilary Scrivens wrote: "May his soul rest in peace."

A South London Coroner’s Office spokeswoman confirmed an inquest into Mr Tomkins' death will be opened in due course.
