HUNDREDS of people turned out to see the unveiling of a new playground in Green Street Green on Saturday.

This follows a £50,000 upgrade at Glentrammon Recreation Ground in Windsor Drive.

The Big Lottery Fund grant comes after the Friends of Glentrammon Recreation Ground and Foxbury Wood successfully bid for the cash.

The new playground, aimed at seven to 13-year-olds, features picnic areas for families and equipment including a 100ft zip wire, a hurricane swing and a buccaneer tower along with swings and roundabouts.

Orpington MP Jo Johnson and the mayor of Bromley Councillor Michael Turner were present at the afternoon-long event, which included a range of fun activities such as bouncy castles, bungee runs, wellie wanging, face painters, lucky dips and raffles.

Portfolio holder for the environment Councillor Colin Smith said: "It is truly magnificent what can be achieved when everyone pulls together.

"Without the work of the Friends of Glentrammon Recreation Ground and Foxbury Wood, this fantastic playground would not be here and we salute them.

"This is yet another example of why we will continue to back our Friends groups despite the budgetary challenges we face.

"I understand that over twenty new Friends joined the group on Saturday alone and if this inspired you, why not join your own local Friends of Parks group?"

Chairman of Friends of Glentrammon Recreation Ground and Foxbury Wood Stephen Ernoult said: "Glentrammon Recreation Ground is a fantastic resource and we, the Friends, hope that local children will enjoy the new equipment of Glentrammon Playground for many years to come.

"We also hope that the addition of picnic benches and improved accessibility will encourage families to come to the park and enjoy this wonderful green space.

"We are always looking for more Friends so if you are local please think about joining us.

"Finally, on behalf of the Friends, may I thank all of the local volunteers and all those who attended for helping to make the opening event such a success."
