BROMLEY’S Liberal Democrats have appointed a new leader.

Councillor Tom Papworth will now lead the main opposition group on Tory-led Bromley Council after Councillor David McBride became mayor.

Cllr McBride had led the Lib Dems in the borough since May 2005.

Of the 60 Bromley councillors, 53 are Conservative, four Lib Dem and three Labour.

Cllr Papworth, ward councillor for Crystal Palace, said: “This is a difficult time for Bromley residents, with the council facing tough challenges.

“Bromley Council needs to listen to its residents more and consult with them on how best to respond to the current challenges.

“As the Conservative administration continues to close its ears to local people, the Liberal Democrats will ensure that Bromley’s citizens are heard.”
