STUDENTS from a Wilmington school are gearing up to race an electric car they have built.
Around 20 pupils from Wilmington Academy in Common Lane took six months to built the car from scratch using cardboard with the help of volunteers.
The youngsters, aged between 11 and 16, hope to race the car in Green Power’s central south regional heat on June 10 at Goodwood Racecourse in Chichester.
Green Power is a national competition designed to introduce young people to mechanical and electrical engineering.
The national final will be held at Silverstone in October.
On May 25, the school was awarded £2,475 funding from car manufacturer Toyota’s community fund to buy overalls and helmets for the team to race in.
Director of learning for Design and Technology at the academy, Joel Newsum said: "The project has been fantastic.
"The student team and even the car itself challenge the perception of what engineering is and who it’s for."
