FOR anyone looking to dine out this summer, Balham Bowls Club has much to offer.

Deciding not to take it at its word, described as “the future of the past” on its website, we went down to find out.

The decor, followed by the size and space that it boasts, are the first things to take in.

The wood panelled walls resemble an old school hall that could tell many tales in the years that they’ve stood.

The rich colours and leather sofas look endearing and coupled with the simple wooden furniture and open plan, it is unpretentious and welcoming.

The same can be said for the staff, who were very warm and offered service with a smile, as well as a notable à la mode style.

You’re able to capture different moods depending on where you choose to sit in the grand hall, from a light and airy summer vibe by the open French doors to something more intimate by candlelight- all at the same time of day.

The choice extends to the menu options, with starters ranging from spiced beetroot salad – a delectable, refreshing opener – to duck terrine, which is delightfully seasoned and accompanied by sweet, flavoursome home-made chutney.

For mains the choices cater to most pallets, offering dishes like gnocchi for the vanilla pallets among us, to lamb tongue for the more Bear Grylls of diners.

In between there’s a healthy choice of fish on the menu, namely swordfish – fantastic and highly recommended – and seabass with seafood broth – watch out for the overwhelmingly fishy mussels.

The desert options are limited but you have enough to satisfy your tastes.

The peanut butter and chocolate cheesecake is our recommendation and the cheeseboard looked lovely – if you have the room.

The wine choices are what you would expect and compliment the food well.

The house rose was our choice for the evening and the bottle was good value at £13.95.

Balham Bowls Club can offer simple pleasures asides from the food with a bar and beer garden, as well as seating outside.

There’s also a large room upstairs able to host functions up to 200 people so all in all, a little something for everyone.

A fantastic find and a definite choice for summer.

A three course meal for two with a bottle of wine will set you back around £65.

Dinner is served Monday to Saturday from 6:30pm until 10:30pm.
