PART of Deptford is being designated a conservation area in a bid to protect its unique character.
The southern section of Creekside along with the Crossfield Estate will be protected for their special architectural and historic interest, after Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock approved the plan last night.
Deptford is one of the oldest settlements in Lewisham, with the street Creekside having its origins in the 16th century and the waterfronts becoming increasingly industrialised during the 1800s.
These days, Creekside is a creative arts hub for the area with places like the Faircharm Trading estate.
The Crossfield Estate is also renowned for its artistic history - a base for legendary bands like Squeeze and Dire Straits.
Their new status means new controls over whether developments enhance the area, preservation of unlisted buildings and cutting down trees.
A consultation in January saw 89 per cent of people support the plan. Objectors included Workspace, which plans to redevelop the Faircharm.
