Powell: Dany was the difference

The attacker, who is on loan from Millwall, scored the only goal against the Saddlers as the Addicks moved even closer to a return to the Championship.

And Powell believes the loan star was the difference between the two sides as he netted his third goal since arriving from The Den.

Powell said: “I thought Dany was a game changer for us.

“He looked lively and scored the goal and he affects the game.

“You are going to need people like that in games such as today where all that matters is the three points.

“I have changed the team a few times but most of the time the players who have come in have made an impact.

“Dany has scored in every home game he has played so far.”

The win on Monday took Charlton to 91 points, which equalled their club record, and maintained their lead over the two resurgent Sheffield clubs with just four matches remaining.

Powell joked: “At the moment it looks like we are going to have to win every game to make sure we go up.

“I have always said if you get to 92 points, two points per game, it gets you promoted but we are one point off that and we are not up yet.

“Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United are doing very well but it is a welcome six points over the last few days.

“We have kept the gap the same over the two Sheffield clubs over the Easter period and games are going to run out soon.

“The fans have been exceptional this season and we really want to get across the line as soon as possible and hopefully that will be in the next few games.

“But, of course, we know if we just keep our heads, keep our composure and keep doing what we are doing we will get there.”

And after taking maximum points from two matches in two days, Powell is seeking a hat-trick of victories over Carlisle when they meet on Saturday.

He added: “We go to Carlisle now having beaten them twice this year and we will be looking to get a third win.

“We know it will be a tough place to get three points but we will be going there in good heart on the back of the wins we have got.

“It is a tough period for everyone, especially for us after going down to nine men on Saturday but still coming out with three points.

“It is always tough to get ready for another League One club within 48 hours but I thought the players were really gutsy and determined and we just hung in.

“I’m really proud of the players because they are under pressure but it is a pressure you should embrace and enjoy because it is better than being at the bottom.”
