A FASHION student from Bexleyheath has been chosen to showcase her designs at London Fashion Week.

Sarah Lee of Ashbourne Avenue will take to the capital to exhibit her illustrations alongside 14 other students chosen from across the country this week.

The 22-year-old, who is in her third and final year at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in Rochester, took five weeks to put the designs together.

She said: “It was a lot of work.

“I was really excited when I found out.

“It’s a great opportunity to show my work outside university and before graduating.

“Hopefully something will come out of it and someone will spot me from the industry.”

Sarah is also a finalist for charity Fashion Awareness Direct’s (FAD) illustration and design competition.

If she is successful, her illustrations and sketchbooks will be showcased at the FAD Gala exhibition at Vauxhall Fashion Scout in London.

Sarah decided on a career in fashion during her art foundation year after she left Townley Grammar School.

She says she was inspired by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, who used old garments to create new clothes.

Her mother, Susan, 49, said: “We’re very proud of her- she does work really hard and she’s always researching and doing her best.

“The family gets to go to London Fashion Week with her to see her exhibition, so we’re really excited, and we might even see some famous designers.

“It could really help her in her career.”

Associate dean of fashion at UCA Donna Ives praised Sarah’s work.

She said: “Sarah’s drawings were really dynamic, demonstrating a strong individual style. She has a real flare for illustration, which is evident in her FAD work.

“Drawing is incredibly important in fashion and is a key skill for every designer.

“It’s used as a tool to communicate designs, not only in illustrative format but also in technical format, and to explain how ideas can be developed into three-dimensional samples.”
