DON’T get ripped off by rogue traders trying to charge for unnecessary work ahead of the digital TV switchover in London in April, Bexley Council and Digital UK has warned.

The bodies are warning against cowboy contractors who may attempt to charge for equipment or carry out work that is not necessary.

They said there is no such thing as a digital aerial and your aerial should not need replacing unless it is in poor condition. Go to Ceefax page 284 for guidance.

If you need a new aerial, you could get one for free under the Switchover Help Scheme, and you should look for contractors who are Registered Digital Installers (RDIs) and display the ‘digital tick’ logo.

This means they are approved, security checked and hold the relevant qualifications and insurance.

Search for a contractor at www.rdi-lb.tv or call Digital UK on 08456 505050. For more information, go to www.digitaluk.co.uk.

If you cannot find an RDI, look for a member of the Confederation of Aerial Industries Plus scheme.

Bexley Council and Digital UK recommend you get a quote from at least two contractors, ask family and friends for recommendations, agree a price, payment and start and finish dates before work starts and never pay upfront.

They also advise residents not to buy from anyone that calls without an appointment. Suspicious callers should be referred to the police of Trading Standards.

If you suspect there is a rogue trader in your area, call 08454 040506.
