KENT Fire and Rescue Service is advising people to check their portable heaters are in good working order following a flat fire.

Around 10 firefighters and two engines attended a maisonette flat fire yesterday (January 9) at 7.48pm, in Shakespeare Road, Dartford.

The blaze is believed to have been caused by an electric portable heater in the bedroom.

The couple who were in the property got out and called the fire service.

Crews removed the heater, extinguished the flames and cleared the flat of smoke.

They also fitted a smoke alarm and offered advice to the flat owners and neighbours.

Watch manager David Boakes said: “With the rising cost of fuel, many residents are avoiding turning on their heating and switching to other methods to keep warm.

"If you are considering using a portable heater, the advice is to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, ensure it is in good working order, and to be on the safe side, have it tested before using it in your home.”

He added: “We offer free safety advice and services so if you have concerns about keeping yourself or a friend or relative safe call Kent Fire and Rescue Service for free on 0800 923 7000 or go to 3breaths.info for further information.”

Firefighters left the scene at around 8pm.
