BUDDING environmentalists have been getting their hands dirty cleaning out the River Cray.

A team of 12 volunteers were handed waders, gloves and litter pickers today (January 9) as they worked to clear the river of rubbish.

Together they collected around 25 bags of waste.

Thames 21 River Cray keeper Michael Heath organised the clean-up.

He said: “It’s a project to get people involved in appreciating the River Cray as a natural waterway and natural habitat.

“We work to get rid of imbedded rubbish in the river before birds start to nest in it in the spring.

“It teaches us about how litter can easily get caught up in the river course and get tangled in the environment, so it’s really important not to throw waste into the water, and to recycle instead.”
