PLANS to hand the registration of birth, deaths and marriages from Bexley Council to Kent County Council could save the taxpayer money, Bexley Council said.

Bexley’s Registrar’s Service could be handed over to KCC, which can offer a wider range of services and support, including online appointments booking, with its larger service. Bexley Council said sharing the management of the service will mean less cost to the taxpayer.

Marriage, civil partnership, naming and renewal of vow ceremonies and recently-launched nationality checking services at Manor House in Sidcup, will continue to be offered by Bexley Council, although the cost of ceremonies there could rise to match those in Kent.

Regular users of the Registrars’ Service, such as doctors and funeral directors, will asked for their opinions, as will other premises that host ceremonies, although anyone is welcome to comment by February 24.

The plan will need to be approved by the General Register Office, part of the Home Office. Deputy leader of the council, councillor Colin Campbell is expected to make a decision in early March.
