The rebuilding of John Roan School's buildings follows "many years of frustration", its deputy headteacher says.

Planning permission was granted last week for the demolition of the lower school’s current building in Westcombe Park Road and for it to be redeveloped to provide 7, 845 square metres of permanent education space, and a sports hall.

It will house Years 9, 10 and 11.

At the upper school recent extensions to the building in Maze Hill as well as temporary classrooms and accommodation will be demolished.

A new roof will be constructed above the northern quadrangle and the existing buildings will be refurbished to house Year 7 and 8 as well as the sixth form.

Deputy headteacher Mike Sansome told News Shopper: “This decision comes after many years of frustration.

“Our students and teachers deserve a decent environment to learn and teach in. At the moment we are in gyms with water dripping into buckets."
