People have been speaking out about the death of a man who was out celebrating his birthday in Bexley at the weekend.

Paul Gunner, 32, was standing outside a kebab shop in Bourne Road at about 1am on October 16 when he was approached by three men.

He was punched and fell to the ground and the men then ran away in the direction of Gravel Hill.

Emergency services were called and Mr Gunner was taken to hospital where he died at 2.26am.

A post mortem examination is set to take place in due course.

Officers believe the men who assaulted Mr Gunner may have been also involved in a separate incident outside the kebab shop just 10 minutes earlier.

The man assaulted was not seriously injured and left the scene.

Firat Kaplaniciram manages the Charcoal Grill kebab shop where the incident took place.

He said: “At the time it was so busy so I didn’t see what happened “We had to close the shop while the police came and had to wait until four in the morning while they checked our CCTV.

“It’s very bad this has happened.”

Louise Reed of Bourne Parade says she saw a commotion from her window which looks out onto Bourne Road.

The mother-of-two said: “We heard lots of shouting but around here, that’s not unusual.

“Then we heard screaming, and we looked out the window.

“There was a man on the floor surrounded by people.

“Someone told us there was blood on the pavement and food everywhere, as it was outside the kebab shop.

“It’s disgusting.

“A bus was also stopped outside which lit up the whole street.”

The 24-year-old added: “It’s definitely made me want to move.

“People come out of the shops and kebab shops and most weekends there’s fighting on the street.

“I’d rather stay in on Friday and Saturday nights as I feel on edge.

“The village is only small.

“Police cordoned off our alley so we couldn’t leave.

“Officers asked us to stay inside.

“I needed to get milk for the children but they didn’t let us out until around 5pm.”

Three people have been arrested in connection with Mr Gunner's death.

The men remain in custody at a south London police station.

Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Goode, of the Met’s homicide and serious crime command is appealing for information on the incident.

He said: "Paul Gunner lost his life on a night which should have been a celebration for him and his family.

“I would appeal for anyone who witnessed this assault, or the altercation that occurred shortly before, to contact police.

“I am particularly keen to speak to the victim of the first assault as he may hold vital details which could help us identify the suspects.

"These are two, apparently, unprovoked assaults.

“Those who carried out these assaults may not be aware of the tragic consequences of their actions.

“I would urge them, or anyone who knows their identity, to come forward and do the right thing."
