A MASSIVE £850m development around Millwall's football ground has been approved - with the developer agreeing to fund a new station.

Lewisham Council’s strategic planning committee resolved to grant developer Renewal's application at a meeting on October 13.

The planning application will now be referred to the Mayor of London to secure his approval.

It means the area north and south of Surrey Canal Road in New Cross could be transformed.

The development will include shops, cafes and restaurants, business space and new leisure and sports facilities along with up to 2,400 new homes.

Millwall’s The Den ground will also have improvements to its exterior and the club’s community scheme will get new premises.

Last week News Shopper reported how the scheme was broadly welcomed by Lions bosses who say there will be room for the stadium’s expansion.

And, as part of the process, Renewal has agreed to fund a new East London Line station at the site.

Lewisham's Deputy Mayor Councillor Alan Smith said: "I welcome the investment in this area and I'm particularly glad that we are going to get a new station at Surrey Canal Road.

"The government have reneged on a plan to build a station so we are pleased that Renewal have stepped in and will work with the Council to make it a reality."
