A STALWART for the community has died just two days shy of her 82nd birthday.
Betty Doreen Doughty was born at her home in Magpie Hall Lane, Bromley Common, on July 24, 1929.
She lived in the borough all her life, later moving to Turpington Lane.
Betty went to Princes Plain Primary School in Church Lane and left at 14 to become a sales girl at a haberdashery shop.
During the Second World War, she raised money for the war effort by putting on dancing and singing shows.
At the age of 22, Betty married Peter at Holy Trinity Church in Bromley Common on March 8, 1952.
They had three daughters, Jill, Jane and Amanda.
Betty was chair of the Turpington Lane Residents’ Association and also a member of the Board of Residents for Broomleigh Housing Association.
Paying tribute, Amanda said: “All her community work was enormously important to her and she always hoped she made a valuable contribution which will be very much missed.”
