LIBRARY campaigners took their fight all the way to 10 Downing Street this week.
Lewisham protestors met up outside the town hall where they handed out a selection of free books, before moving on to London’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport and then Number 10.
Their protest came after Lewisham Council agreed to close five of its libraries, handing three to Deptford’s Eco Computer Systems, Blackheath Village library to charity Age Concern and leaving the future of New Cross’s facility unclear. 
George Hallam of campaign group Lewisham People Before Profit said: “No doubt some of the people involved have good intentions but you know what they say - the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
“It’s not possible for them to run a capable library service - it requires trained staff, space and buildings.
“If you try to do things on the cheap you end up with a degraded service.”
At the DCMS and Number 10, protestors handed in a dossier of evidence they claim shows the closures are illegal and the government should intervene.
