RESIDENTS are being invited to give feedback on Greenwich Council’s plans to tackle climate change.

The council’s Climate Change Strategy, published this week, sets out a range of proposed measures and recommendations designed to reduce the borough’s carbon footprint.

Measures are also proposed to enable the borough to cope with the consequences of change that is already occurring or predicted.

The strategy includes plans to reduce the council’s own carbon emissions and proposals to encourage residents and businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

It also looks at how changes to behaviour, technology and policy can contribute to lowering emissions.

Actions which may be taken in terms of new and existing developments, waste disposal, biodiversity, energy supply and transport are also outlined.

Examples include a proposal to require all new developments in the borough to include measures for encouraging public transport use and promoting walking and cycling.

There are also proposals to make greater use of low emission fuel and vehicles.

Greenwich Council’s cabinet member for Greener Greenwich, Councillor Rajwant Sidhu said, “Our aim is to reduce our CO2 emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

"This is an ambitious, but achievable target, and necessary if Greenwich wants to show leadership in meeting the global climate change challenge.”

The consultation on the climate change strategy runs until June 19.
