CHEAP prices, expensive ices could be the slogan for an Oriental restaurant which is charging diners 10 pence per ice cube in their water.

Legislation brought in last April means it is now illegal for restaurants and pubs to make people pay for tap water if it is readily available but at Yoe Bo in Orpington it will set you back 20 pence.

This is because when a customer asks for tap water at the eaterie in the High Street it comes with two ice cubes, which can legally be charged for.

David Kirby-Smith, of Leamington Avenue, Orpington, treated a friend to a meal there and thought the staff had made a mistake with the bill because the food prices were a lot less than he was expecting.

But then he noticed the charge for iced water and after querying it was told the price was clearly on the menu.

The menu does display a charge for tap water with ice but Mr Kirkby-Smith did not ask for ice.

He said: “I think it’s outrageous.

“It’s the most expensive ice in Orpington at 10 pence a cube.

“I’d like to know how a restaurant can charge 20 pence for ice.”
