Thames21’s Bexley riverkeeper Ashe Hurst has organised a river clean-up of the River Cray at Hall Place, Bourne Road, Bexley, on Saturday (5th Feb), starting at 11am and finishing at 2pm. Helpers should meet in the new sports pavilion car park at 10.45am. All equipment will be provided.

People are being urged to turn their gardens into mini nature reserves as part of a campaign by the London Wildlife Trust. Its Garden for a Living London shows people how to attract a variety of wildlife and reduce the impacts of climate change. Go to wildlondon.org.uk for details.

It was the year of cycling in London in 2010, now London’s Mayor Boris Johnson wants to use 2011 to unlock the potential in the outer London boroughs such as Bexley, with campaigns, events and new infrastructure to persuade people to get out of their cars and onto a bike.

Anglers over the age of 12 are being reminded they need to buy a new rod licence to cover the fishing season from March 1 until September. Licences are available at post offices, online from the Environment Agency website or by calling 0844 800 5386.

Lesnes Abbey Conservation Volunteers will be clearing the glades in Lesnes Abbey Wood on Sunday (6th) in invasive plants such as brambles to enable native plants to flourish in the spring. Volunteers should meet next to the information centre by the abbey ruins off Abbey Road, Abbey Wood at noon and wear suitable clothing. Call 020 8310 3033.
