A FIREMAN is hanging up his hose for the last time as he retires after 30 years of service.

East Greenwich fire station crew manager, Eddie Greenhead, began his career aged 26 but says he wish he joined the brigade earlier.

The 56-year-old, who has two sons and four grandchildren, has covered two terrorist explosions in London and seen some horrific road traffic collisions.

But he insists: “I’m as brave as any other fireman.”

Mr Greenhead, of Duncroft Road, Plumstead, said: “I’m very sad. The one thing I’m going to miss is getting on the fire engine and going out.”

He added: “I’m now going to bring my handicap up playing golf and spend more time with my grandchildren.”
