A FAMILIAR sight on Belvedere’s skyline is quickly disappearing.

Ten overhead pylons are being removed from the area by UK Power Networks at a cost of £580,000.

The pylons, some up to 50m hight, march across 2.5km of land between Waldrist Way in Thamesmead and Norman Road, Belvedere.

They carrying 132,000 volt overhead power lines, which have been replaced by underground cables.

Up to 30 workers are expected to take between three and four weeks to complete the work.

They will use a series of cranes, including an 80-tonne machine to remove the steelwork in sections.

Some road closures may be necessary while the work is carried out.

First the insulators and fittings will be removed, to be used elsewhere in the network.

Then winches will be used to lower the 30 km of overhead cables, which will be recycled.

Finally, specialist overhead linesmen will unbolt the pylons and the 150 tonnes of steel will be lowered to the ground in sections using the cranes.

The steelwork will also be recycled.
