LEWISHAM libraries could be run by community groups under a council proposal.
Libraries in Crofton Park, Grove Park, Blackheath, Sydenham and New Cross could close as part of Lewisham Council’s series of cuts.
But a decision has not yet been taken while other ways of running the services are examined - including handing the building lease to community organisations.
Under the scheme, the council would continue to provide books and services like homework sessions, but groups would need to set out a business case on how running costs would be funded.
Cabinet member for community services Councillor Chris Best said: “We’re looking for vibrant organisations to take over the management of the buildings and ensure that they continue to stand at the heart of the community.”
