A BLAZE in a pub kitchen led to drinkers being evacuated and Greenwich Market being partly closed down.

Staff tried to fight the fire which started in the Coach and Horses at around 12.15pm on Saturday (December 6).

But the flames quickly spread and they had to evacuate the building and call 999 as the fire engulfed the kitchen.

The corner of the market where the building is was closed while firefighters from Greenwich, Lee Green and Forest Hill, fought the blaze.

It took them around four hours as they cut away a lot of the ceiling to make sure it had not spread to the floor above.

The fire damaged some of the electrical wiring and there was water damage to the pub.

It is believed the blaze started because of a faulty thermostat on a piece of kitchen equipment.
