THE announcement by firefighters to stage a two day strike beginning on Bonfire Night could jeopardise arrangements to hold fireworks events across the borough.

As a result of the decision by the Fire Brigades Union to walkout at 10am on November 5 until 7am on November 7, the Chislehurst Rotary Club is reviewing its plans for a fireworks night on November 6.

Publicity officer for the rotary club Maggie Gebbett says the union's announcement raises "massive and serious concerns".

She said: "We'll be talking to Bromley Council and reviewing the situation in the next couple of days.

"At the moment we don't have any plans to cancel but we need to talk to the council and decide whether it's safe to go ahead."

Mrs Gebbett said while she hopes firefighters will change their minds, strike action would "seriously damage their reputation with the public if they don't recant".

The union has called for industrial action after claiming firefighters were being threatened with the sack if they didn't agree to new shift patterns.

General secretary Matt Wrack said: “We do not want to take this action but we have no choice.

“The alternative is to allow London’s firefighters to become doormats for their employers to walk on.”

Firefighters staged a one day strike on Saturday with just one fire engine covering the whole borough at times, according to the union.

Further strike action is also planned for November 1.
