BOGUS water workmen were targeted by trading standards officers - saving one elderly man £2,500.

Greenwich Council officers have been advising banks on rogue traders and one branch contacted the team when an elderly man tried withdrawing £2,500.

Officers discovered the man had been targeted by a bogus water workman scam having been cold called earlier that day.

The conmen claimed that lots of gravel had found their way into his drainage system and he needed to pay to sort the problem out.

No money was exchanged after officers and the bank intervened and the council is carrying out further investigations.
