PEOPLE are being reminded about their legal responsibilities when they dispose of their household waste.

Householders have a legal duty to make sure household waste produced on their property is only given to an authorised person to take away.

If an unauthorised person fly tips your waste and the rubbish is traced back, the housholder responsible could be fined up to £5,000.

Bexley Council is advising people who hire builders, gardeners, house clearers or scrap metal merchants, who are removing rubbish from their property, to check they are a registered waste carrier and ask for their register number.

If the contractor is not registered, residents should refuse their services and and tell them to contact the Environment Agency for advice.

And check anyone offering to take waste away "on the cheap", as it could end up being fly tipped For more information go to bexley.gov.uk or call 020 8303 7777.
