BOWLERS across the borough have rolled back the years and celebrated the history of their sport.

Founding member of the Bromley Council Bowling Clubs Association, Harry Thorpe, was honoured with a plaque presented at Queen's Mead Bowling Club.

The late Mr Thorpe, former president of the Queen’s Mead club, helped form the association in 1987 to represent all clubs in Bromley and Beckenham.

Current club president Derek Brown said: “We wanted to honour all the work he did for the BCBCA, he was a prime mover in getting an indoor bowling facility built in Bromley.

“He was known as Mr Bowling.”

The plaque recognising his achievements was presented at the Recreation Ground, Queen's Mead Road, Bromley.

Meanwhile men and women at the Bromley Common Bowling Club, which meets at the Whitehall Recreation Ground in Walpole Road, have marked their 100th anniversary.

Formed in 1910, the club commemorated the occasion with a triples match in the morning followed by lunch at Bickley Manor in Thornet Wood Road.

Club captain Dave Bright says the 65 people who turned out enjoyed a great day, including the mayor of Bromley Councillor George Taylor.

Mr Bright said: “It’s a good healthy and social sport usually for older people but younger people are most welcome.

“We’d love to get teenagers into it.”
