AS birth stories go, being delivered into your dad’s arms in a hospital car park is one of the more memorable.

Jenny Davidson delivered son Alex into husband Andrew’s arms in the back seat of their car in the car park at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) at 1.19am on Thursday (April 29).

This followed a frantic dash to the hospital from their home in Wendover Road, Bromley, when Mrs Davidson’s contractions shortened suddenly.

The 39-year-old said: “I was woken at 11.50pm by my waters breaking and phoned the labour ward at the PRUH.

“I was advised to try and relax and get some sleep as labour would probably not start for two to 24 hours.

“However, within 10 minutes I had my first contraction and within 40 minutes the contractions seemed to be coming every 45 seconds.

“With the help of Andy I managed to get down the stairs to the front door but suddenly had an overwhelming urge to push.

“While Andy went to get the car I called an ambulance, but after waiting around 10 minutes Andy was convinced he could get me to the hospital in time.

“Between contractions he managed to get me in the back of the car and drove like Lewis Hamilton in a scene from the Cannonball Run to the hospital.

“We arrived at the hospital at around 1.10am and Andrew parked the car and switched off the lights.

“As he raced to get a wheelchair I thought I was going to give birth on my own in the back of our car on our lovely cream leather seats.

“Fortunately Andy made it back in time and as he was trying to get me out of the car into the wheelchair I could not hold off from pushing anymore.

“Andy was yelling at me to sit in the chair and I was screaming that the head was coming.

“With that, he sat in the wheelchair behind me and pulled down my trousers.

“Although he couldn't quite believe our baby's head was crowning, he managed to phone the delivery suite to let them know we were giving birth in the car park.

“We waited for the next contraction and with a final push Alex flew into daddy's arms.

“After what seemed like an interminable wait Alex began to cry while the umbilical cord was wrapped round dad's arm.

“Despite the intensity of the moment I still managed to ask the time of delivery.

“The midwives came racing out and found us only because they could hear Alex's cries.

“Alex was then wrapped up in towels and we were all taken up to the delivery suite in a state of shock.”

Baby Alex was healthy and weighed 8lb 3oz and his proud parents were able to take him home on Saturday.

Mrs Davidson said: “We would like to thank the midwifery team and say a special thank you to two members of the team, Linda and Juliette.”

Alex joins older sister Ava, 18 months, in the home of the Davidson’s, who have been married for two-and-a-half years.

Mr Davidson, 44, who is the director of office refurbishing company Meronden Ltd, said: “To deliver my own baby boy was an incredible experience I will never forget.”
