STUDENTS have put forward their ideas to college managers in an attempt to keep their language school open.

The school, run by Greenwich Community College, will close at the end of this summer unless ways to keep it running can be found.

Students claim it is the last of its kind in south London, offering GCSEs and A-Levels in French, German and Spanish.

One hundred students at the school have signed a petition against the closures, which was presented to college principal Geoff Pine by 17-year-old French and Spanish student Connor Byrne.

They also provided suggestions for ways to keep the courses going, after the college consulted staff and pupils.

Connor, who goes to the college for evening classes twice a week, said: “This college is my last chance. If it closes I will be unable to complete my A-Levels.”

The threatened closure comes after the college had its further education budget for the next academic year slashed by £750,000.

Last month, News Shopper reported how the college-run Meridian Music Centre in Greenwich could also be closed due to the funding cut.

The college is due to make a final decision on May 10.

A college spokesman said: “We’re gathering together people’s suggestions and looking through them.

“It’s a national problem - every college in the country is facing similar cuts.”

He added: “As a college we’ve been lobbying our three local MPs because this funding is being cut at the most critical time for the country and local people.”
