COMMUTERS and revellers have been searched for drugs and knives in a police crackdown.

A walk-through metal detector and a sniffer dog were used during Operation Summer Sun at Beckenham train station on May 26.

The operation aimed to keep people safe while out in Beckenham by stopping people from bringing knives and drugs into the town.

Commanding officer Inspector Rob Atkins said: "People carry knives for a lot of reasons but if you are going to carry it then you are going to use it.

"When we find out about knife crime it is when we see the consequences. If you are going to come into the borough do not come with your knives."

Two people were arrested during the operation.

Sarah Byrne, aged 42, of St Saviours Road, Brixton, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Colin Davidson, aged 26, of the Finsbury Estate, north London, was arrested and charged with carrying a blade in a public place.

Both of them appeared at Bromley Magistrates' Court yesterday.
