BUDDING gardeners are being encouraged to enter a contest where big is best.
Lewisham Council has launched a tallest sunflower competition and is encouraging schools across the borough to take part.
Selected schools including Stillness Infant School, Brockley Rise, Brockley, have been handed free packs of sunflower seeds.
The council says it hopes the competition will teach both children and adults about the merits of composting and environmentally-friendly gardening.
Pupils will take part in the under-16s section, which offers a miniature gardening kit as a prize.
There is a separate contest for people over 16 with a £50 garden voucher to be won.
All entrants should take a photograph of their sunflower and add its height and their name, age, address and telephone number on the back.
Photographs should be sent to Sunflower Competition, Lewisham Council, Freepost Lon 15119, SE13 7BR. Entries must be in by September 15.
